Witherspoon Is Panned For Role During Bust
Actress to cop: "You are going to be on national news."
APRIL 22--Here’s the police report memorializing last Friday’s arrest of Reese Witherspoon, the Oscar-winning actress who was collared after she allegedly interfered with police as they arrested her spouse for drunk driving.
As detailed in the Georgia Department of Public Safety report, the 37-year-old star got mouthy as a cop had Witherspoon’s husband, James Toth, perform a series of field sobriety tests.
The 42-year-old Toth, a Hollywood talent agent, was driving a Ford Focus when an officer spotted the vehicle weaving across lanes of traffic on an Atlanta street. Following a traffic stop, a cop noted that Toth smelled of booze and appeared intoxicated.
While Toth performed the sobriety tests, Witherspoon (seen in the adjacent mug shot) had to be repeatedly told by an officer to return to the couple’s car or she would be arrested. “Yes sir,” she replied.
While in the vehicle, Witherspoon “began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer,” noted Trooper J. Pyland. “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.”
When Witherspoon again exited the Ford, Pyland demanded, “What had I already told you?” and directed the celebrity to return to the vehicle. That is when Witherspoon “stated that she was a ‘US Citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’”
Pyland then arrested Witherspoon, who was initially “resistant” when the handcuffs emerged. The actress then delivered these memorable lines, Pyland reported:
* “Do you know my name?”
* “You’re about to find out who I am.”
* “You are going to be on national news.”
Witherspoon, who has been filming a movie in Atlanta, was charged with disorderly conduct. In a statement released last night, Witherspoon said she was “deeply embarrassed” about her “disrespectful” statements to the cop, noting that, “I clearly had one drink too many.” (2 pages)
